Charles Royal Maorifood Trail

Tarawera Falls

I pick you up from your accommodation and take you to Pounamu Lodge Lake Tarawera, Rotorua this is when our Maorifood Trail starts.

We have morning tea at Pounamu Lodge, pounamu means greenstone, we are taken by water taxis across the lake to Mount Tarawera.

Mt Tarawera is a large dormant volcano that last erupted over a 150 years ago, this displaced one of our main tribes here in Rotorua. The name of the tribe was named after an ancestor Tuhourangi, this is the name of the local tribe that lived around the lake. The eruption also destroyed & devastated the pink & white terraces that was going to be the 8th wonder of the World back in the 1800's.

During our guided Maorifood trail you will be shown different types of plants and tree's that can be eaten and others that can't be eaten because they are highly toxic and can be fatal if eaten. I"ll show you a variety of medicine plants that assist with the purification of the blood when taken as a tea or tonic it can be used to bath in, to combat eczema and skin allergies.

After our adventure through the bush, we arrive at the waterfall and have lunch which includes foods we have collected on the way and lots more korero or talk. While having lunch we talk about the waterfall and how they were formed during the eruption and what impact it had on all of the tribes around Rotorua and New Zealand.

Surviving locals moved to all area's of Rotorua and New Zealand, many relatives from as far as Auckland down to the South Island gave land to the people of the Tuhourangi tribe, they stayed away for a while but most returned back to their tribal lands here in Rotorua. Most of the descendants from the Mt Tarawera area are now living in the Rotorua area, particularly around the Whakarewarewa Thermal Village area.

After lunch, approx 1 hour 30 mins later, we make our way back through the bush to our water taxis we cross the lake back to the lodge and then home.
